PRAGUE & CZECHIA HISTORY IN A NUTSHELL

Prague is the capital of the Czech Republic, located in Central Europe on the Vltava River. Often called the “City of a Hundred Spires,” it has been a major political and cultural center for centuries.

Key periods before World War II
Medieval period: Prague became the capital of the Kingdom of Bohemia and one of the most important cities in the Holy Roman Empire. In the 14th century, under Emperor Charles IV, it flourished as a center of learning and trade.
Religious conflict: Prague played a key role in early religious reform movements, especially with Jan Hus in the 15th century.
Habsburg rule (16th–19th centuries): The city became part of the Habsburg Empire, remaining culturally important but losing some political power.
After World War I: In 1918, Prague became the capital of the new state of Czechoslovakia.

Major 20th-century events
Nazi occupation: Germany occupied Prague during World War II. The city was spared major destruction but lost much of its Jewish population.
Communist period: After 1948, Czechoslovakia came under communist rule. The Prague Spring of 1968, an attempt to create reforms and greater freedom, was crushed by Soviet forces.
After 1989: The Velvet Revolution ended communist rule peacefully. In 1993, Czechoslovakia split into two states, and Prague became the capital of the Czech Republic.

Why Prague matters in European history
Prague represents Europe’s long intellectual traditions, religious struggles, and peaceful resistance to authoritarian rule. Its well-preserved historic center and role in major political changes make it a key city for understanding Europe’s past and present.
