s_aut_mauthausen-memorial-camp-stone-wall-with-.jpg

Memorial KZ-Mauthausen Tour

Duration: 9 hrs

From 1938 to 1945, the Mauthausen Concentration Camp was at the centre of a system of over 40 subcamps and was the main site of political, social, racist and anti-Semitic persecution by the National Socialist regime on Austrian territory. Of a total of around 190,000 people imprisoned here, at least 90,000 were murdered.

The task of the Mauthausen Memorial is to ensure public awareness of the history of the Mauthausen Concentration Camp and its subcamps, the memory of its victims, and the responsibility borne by the perpetrators and onlookers. At the same time it promotes public critical engagement with this history in the context of its significance for the present and future. Therefore it researches and documents the history of the Mauthausen Concentration Camp and its sub-camps, and empowers its visitors through exhibitions and educational programmes to deal with the history of concentration camps.

It aims at pointing out comparable present day developments, tendencies and processes and to raise levels of awareness, in particular surrounding issues such as the reactivation of National Socialist ideology, anti-Semitism, racism, minority discrimination and anti-democratic activities.

Thus, the Mauthausen Concentration Camp Memorial is a former crime scene, a memorial site, a cemetery for thousands of people murdered here and a place of historical-political education.

From Vienna, a certified guide will accompany you to Mauthausen and explain the most important information about Austrian history and the Second World War on the way to the memorial. On site, pedagogically trained mediators of the memorial take care of the participants. The tour will be held in English and will take place mostly outdoors. Please come dressed according to the weather.
