Easter 2016 – come to Prague and whip girls
The spring is knocking on the door.. and the Easter Markets are coming to Prague! Go for some sweets, painted eggs or just enjoy the atmosphere!
Easter in Czech Republic (called “Velikonoce”) has its own typical features. And quite a few foreigners might consider some of them to be strange – at least to say.
Among the most popular Easter customs in Czech belong painted eggs (“kraslice”), an Easter stick (“pomlázka”) made of willow wattle, and specific cake Easter lamb (“velikonoční beránek”).
There are many techniques for decorating eggs and they differ across regions in Czech Republic. See example on Youtube
The eggs can be either hard boiled or emptied before being decorated, and are used as an Easter decoration or as prize for boys. You can buy these eggs at every Easter Market in Prague starting from Saturday 19.03.
“Pomlázka” has the only purpose – boys use it to gently (sometimes not) whip girls who happily except it and above that, they reward boys with hand-painted eggs (or with shots of alcohol depending on the age). That´s because the girls believe that their beauty will then persist for another year!!! And it works
This is happening on Easter Monday so watch up in that day if being a female. Threat should end at noon. All in all, this day is colourful and a joy for everyone who likes traditions or just a bit of fun.
