Opera, ballet and drama in one of the most beautiful Czech theatres.
The glorious, golden roofed centrepiece of the Czech National Revival, the National Theatre (Národní divadlo), provided a stage for the re-emergence of Czech culture in the late 19th and early 20th century. Today the traditional opera, drama and ballet by Smetana, Verdi, Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev and Shakespeare share the program with more modern works by composers and playwrights such as Philip Glass and Tom Stoppard. The building has a special place in the heart of all Czechs, since the construction was fully financed by collecting money among the broad masses of the population. Operas are staged in the original version with English subtitles. Guests are encouraged to dress smartly.
